SITE DEAN, SCHOLARS PROGRAM

I initially learned about SEEDS as a middle-school student in Essex County. And while I did not participate in the program, I knew it was one that I wanted to be a part of in some capacity.

As an educator who not only hails from but also works in Newark, it was important for me to work with students who are like me, who are seeking vast opportunities in their journey towards college success. That journey truly starts from a young age for many in the world. SEEDs is an excellent program that works with students from an early age, providing access to schools that will ensure that college success becomes a reality one day. A major component of serving as a Site Dean is ensuring that they are empowered with the right tools as they continue their educational journey. The schools that the students learn about and then go on to attend, it’s amazing to witness.

SEEDS is an instrumental part of changing the lives of students. SEEDS exposes students to various learning opportunities and schools that will not only change the outcomes of their own lives but the lives of their families.

In my interactions with the students as a Site Dean, I have noticed how curious and adaptable they are. They are eager to learn about social issues and express their differing opinions. They really think about the whole picture and not just how they will be affected by different situations. They are very empathetic, and I think that is something we need more of in the world today and am grateful that they will be the future leaders of the world.

I want to encourage others to give to SEEDS in the same capacity that I have by saying this: in the words of an old African proverb, “It takes a village.” SEEDS works collaboratively with so many different stakeholders to support each student that comes through the program. It is critical and crucial to our own communities to support SEEDS. The rewards will be plentiful.

Outside of SEEDS, I work with Uncommon Schools North Star Academy Lincoln Park High School as an Office Coordinator for the Office of College Access and Success.
