NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation Awards Grant to New Jersey SEEDS

Changing the Lives of Motivated, High-Achieving Students by Transforming Educational Opportunities

New Jersey SEEDS (SEEDS), a privately funded, statewide, nonprofit organization, announced today that The NASDAQ OMX Group Educational Foundation has provided a multi-year grant to develop an intensive curriculum in business and finance for high-achieving, low-income students preparing to enter selective high schools nationwide. The curriculum will be implemented during the Capstone Experience, a three-week summer residential program for eighth graders enrolled in SEEDS’ Scholars Program.

The NASDAQ OMX Business & Finance curriculum will allow students to explore the creative and intellectual aspects of the industry. Students will learn the basics of personal finance: savings, debt, credit and credit scores, compound interest, investments and risk. Students will examine the challenges of entrepreneurship, the art and science of marketing, and the law of supply and demand. Scholars will debate the pros and cons of government regulation and explore the role of public goods (like education, transportation, parks and public safety) in modern economies. In addition, SEEDS students will each follow a NASDAQ OMX stock and have the opportunity to develop their own business plans.

“We are extremely grateful to The NASDAQ OMX Educational Foundation for enabling us to bring sophisticated concepts in business and finance to young people growing up in an increasingly competitive world,” said Ronni Denes, President of SEEDS. “The opportunity for our students to learn about their own financial potential while gaining broad career awareness is a tremendous advantage.”

Students will complete an in-depth study in mathematics – their key subject area – while also taking coursework in English, history and science. In addition, Scholars will participate in seminars and presentations by industry leaders and key executives.

“As a global provider of capital markets services, it is our social responsibility to help organizations like New Jersey SEEDS to provide financial education to scholars who will become tomorrow’s leaders,” said Lee Shavel, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of NASDAQ OMX and SEEDS Trustee. “We are proud that the NASDAQ OMX Business & Finance curriculum will be a strategic part of the SEEDS journey, preparing innovative thinkers for the future.”

New Jersey SEEDS is scheduled to ring the opening bell on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the NASDAQ MarketSite in Times Square, NY.
