In June, SEEDS’ annual College Day (view photos) saw more than 50 colleges and universities on hand to meet with students and alumni, and the Independent School Fair in September (view photos) allowed Scholars and Young Scholars to visit with more than 90 day and boarding schools.
College Day kicked off with a welcome presentation and college panel, featuring SEEDS grad Faith Northern (SEEDS ’18, Vassar College), Faith’s mom – Nicole Northern, Michelle Harvey (Assistant Director of Admission, Vassar College) and Amy Cooperman (College Counselor, The Pingry School). Afterwards, students and parents had the opportunity to attend two different breakout sessions hosted by college representatives on a variety of topics, including “Paying for College,” “Thriving at a ‘PWI’ as a Student of Color,” “Writing a Stellar College Essay,” and “Creating Your College: How to Demonstrate Interest.”
Following these sessions, College Scholars and Scholars and Young Scholars graduates – along with all of their families – enjoyed lunch, and then introduced themselves to college representatives. In all, 250 students and family members attended the event on June 16.
On Saturday, September 8, SEEDS’ Scholars, Young Scholars and their families took part in the annual Independent School Fair at Newark Academy.
More than 90 selective day and boarding schools were on hand, and students and their families had the opportunity to meet with representatives of their prospective schools. In addition to the Fair itself, students and parents listened in to an admissions panel, featuring topics such as promoting yourself, considering all of your school options, joining a new school community, and how to get involved beyond the classroom. Parents then participated in a financial aid workshop, while Scholars and Young Scholars learned about how to present their best self.
Thanks to Newark Academy for hosting us for a terrific event and to the day’s panelists and facilitators for sharing their expertise: Keith Fischer (Newark Academy), Alexandra Holzman (Newark Academy), Kyle Mason (Cate School), Marie Myers (Concord Academy), Jeff Stodgel (The Webb Schools) and Yassine Talhaoui (The Hotchkiss School)!
