The school year may be winding down, but SEEDS scholars are preparing to head back to campus this summer with SEEDS.
College Scholars in the Class of 2019 will wrap up Saturday classes with SEEDS in June. During their first semester with SEEDS, students have been conducting college research, participating in College 101 and taking part in ACT preparation each Saturday. Students will take a second ACT on June 9, and then participate in College Day on June 16. Soon, these College Scholars will spend their first summer with SEEDS at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York. Beginning their three week Summer Collegiate Experience on Sunday, June 24, College Scholars will be working on personal statements and finalizing college lists.
Meanwhile, College Scholars in the Class of 2018 have already completed SEEDS classes and will celebrate their graduation on June 9. Twenty-two of our College Scholars seniors were accepted to college through Early Decision, Early Decision II or QuestBridge matches. Collectively, our College Scholars have received more than 100 acceptances to colleges across 15 states. Stay tuned to your email for more information on their college selections!
Scholars and Young Scholars completed academic Saturday classes with SEEDS on May 19. Before they wrapped up for the semester, Scholars participated in an annual Hospital Day event at Morristown Medical Center. Scholars shadowed healthcare professionals in a variety of areas, including: pharmacy, pediatric surgery, emergency medicine, the operating room, pediatrics, radiology, physical therapy/rehabilitation and gastroenterology. In the afternoon, Scholars heard from medical professionals in different industries within healthcare and participated in an ethics discussion. Check out photos from their day.
Scholars will begin their second summer with SEEDS – the final step of the 14-month journey – on Sunday, July 15. The three-week Capstone Experience at The Hill School (Pottstown, Pennsylvania) will end on Friday, August 3; Scholars will celebrate graduation with their families on Saturday, August 4.
Young Scholars will also celebrate graduation on Saturday, August 4, after completing their five-week summer session at Far Brook School, which runs from Monday, July 2 through Friday, August 3.
Over the past few months, Young Scholars have had the opportunity to take part in a number of activities, in addition to Saturday academic classes. Once a month, Young Scholars received a visit from the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Each visit, students worked to create their own artwork based on a lesson from the Visual Arts team. Then, in late April, Young Scholars traveled to the Visual Arts Center and created pieces inspired by Paul Corio’s “Stair-Gazing.”
Young Scholars also participated in two Brown Bag Lunch sessions with SEEDS alumni. In each discussion – “Independent School Insider’s Scoop” and “Code Switching” – Young Scholars heard directly from fellow SEEDlings about their experiences in transitioning to new schools.
Sanofi also hosted a series of workshops for Young Scholars this spring. In early March, volunteers from Sanofi led students in an activity related to the environment, where Young Scholars made recyclable grocery bags out of old tee shirts. In April, Sanofi volunteers explained blood flow and the ways that blood is prevented from flowing throughout the body. To demonstrate this, students conducted experiments mimicking clogged arteries to see if water was able to pass through. Thanks to the volunteers for great experiences!
